U.S. Mediators Working on 60-Day Ceasefire Proposal Between Israel and Hezbollah

Forex - The American news agency Reuters has reported that U.S. mediators are working on a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. According to a report citing two sources, the U.S. is drafting a proposal that would initiate a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah Movement. A source familiar with the discussions and a senior diplomat working on Lebanon indicated that this two-month period would be used to ensure the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006 but largely unimplemented. The diplomat stated, "There is a serious effort to reach a ceasefire, but implementing it remains difficult." Another source mentioned that Israel is pressuring for the right to conduct airstrikes if Hezbollah violates the agreement.

The spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Sama Habib, responded to a question regarding the proposal by saying, "We want to reiterate that we are seeking a diplomatic solution that fully implements Resolution 1701 and allows citizens on both sides of the border—both Israelis and Lebanese—to return to their homes."

Resolution 1701 The UN's Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, aims to establish peace along the Lebanon-Israel border, requiring Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River and calling for the disarmament of all armed forces and personnel in the South Lebanon border area except those belonging to the Lebanese state.
