Icelandair Launches Flights to Istanbul Airport (IGA)
Icelandair, the national airline of Iceland, will commence flights to Istanbul Airport (IGA) on September 5, 2025. Flights from Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik, Iceland, will operate four times a week, connecting Icelandair passengers in North America and Iceland to Asia and the Middle East, as well as Turkish Airlines (THY) passengers from Istanbul to Iceland, Canada, and North America.
IGA Istanbul Airport welcomed 67.6 million passengers in the first ten months of 2024, enhancing its international presence with connections to 321 destinations worldwide and continuously expanding its network of airlines. Icelandair, one of the major airlines in Northern Europe, will operate flights to Istanbul using Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft with a capacity of 160 seats. The commencement of operations at IGA Istanbul Airport represents significant importance for providing passengers with a wide network.
According to the code-sharing agreement signed between Icelandair and Turkish Airlines (IS:THYAO) (THY), Icelandair passengers in North America and Iceland will be able to connect eastward, particularly to Asia and the Middle East, via the Turkish Airlines network, while Turkish Airlines passengers can connect westward to Iceland, Canada, and North America through Icelandair flights. This code-sharing allows passengers to travel on a single ticket and enjoy the convenience of having their baggage delivered to their final destination.
Server Aydın, the Deputy General Manager of Commercial Affairs at IGA Istanbul Airport, expressed satisfaction regarding the commencement of Icelandair's operations in Istanbul, stating: "In the first nine months of 2024, Istanbul hosted 14 million tourists, representing a growth of 6.6%. We are pleased to contribute to the increasing number of tourists arriving in our city from various locations around the world. The addition of Icelandair, the national airline of one of Northern Europe's most significant countries, is particularly important in this regard. This connection is not just a new route; it will serve as a bridge combining Iceland's magnificent natural beauty with Istanbul's rich cultural heritage. We are opening endless discoveries and new horizons for tourism and trade. Together with Icelandair, we are redefining the spirit of global travel at IGA Istanbul Airport."
